CiA has released version 2.0.0 for CANopen load cells, scales, and HMI (human machine interface) devices. The four documents are published as draft specification proposals. They introduce functional safety capability compliant with CANopen Safety.
History of CAN technology
CiA updated the page "History of CAN technology". In February of 1986, Robert Bosch introduced the CAN serial bus system at the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) congress. It was the hour of birth for one of the most successful network protocols ever. Read more.
CAN lower- and higher-layer protocols
The knowledge pages provide technical information on the CAN data link layer protocols and several CAN physical layer options. CiA updated this page, take a look at it.
J1939 technology day
On April 29, a J1939 technology day in English language takes place. This CiA technology day presents status and future of J1939-based networking. This includes the standardization activities in SAE, ISO, and IEC. You can still register.
CiA organizes a CAN XL update webinar. The free of charge event takes place on April 13 and is in English language. Anyone can attend, please register here.
SAE J1939 and CAN FD
The SAE J1939-22 document specifying the mapping of J1939 messages to CAN FD data frames has been released. It also includes the Multi-PDU concept originally described in CiA 602-2 and a new transport layer concept.
CiA 110 released
The IG lower layers has published its CAN/CAN FD common mode choke document as Draft Specification Proposal. It specifies requirements and test methods of mechanical and electrical parameters. Members can download it free of charge.
CleANopen CiA 422 on Youtube
At CiA's Youtube channel, a video regarding CiA 422 has been uploaded. CleANopen is the trade name of the CANopen application profile for municipal vehicles. The CiA 422 application profile specifies virtual devices for refuse collecting vehicles.
CANopen in food/beverage industry
In the latest issue of the CAN Newsletter magazine, there's an article about corrosion-protected solutions for the food and beverage industry without stainless steel. In those systems, CANopen frequency inverters are used.
The problems are solved, not by giving new information, but by arranging what we have known since long.
CiA community
The CAN community is huge. More than two billion of CAN nodes are installed annually. And this figure is still growing. The number of CAN fellows organized in the nonprofit CiA users’ and manufacturers’ group is much smaller. Due to new CAN data link layer (CAN XL and CAN FD Light) and new CAN physical medium attachment developments (CAN SIC and CAN SIC XL), the membership is growing, too. There are also new members interested in CiA profile developed for new markets such as battery management, fire-fighting equipment, etc.
“We take the already existing ideas in communication technology as well as in human communication, arrange them newly, and new specifications and recommendations are born,” said Holger Zeltwanger, CiA Managing Director.
